Death brought them together…
…Now Death may tear them apart.

After a couple blissful months exploring their new relationship—while balancing their hectic soul-guiding jobs—Deacon and Mia are faced with their biggest threat yet. Fellow Death Dealers are being murdered and the one thing they know for sure is that no human is capable of such a thing. Their cryptic Death Angel boss has some answers, and discovering them could put Mia in more danger than ever before. The battle between good and evil wages on and time is of the essence to find the killer before another murder can happen. But learning their identity sends shock waves throughout the underworld, and the threat of an apocalypse looms. When Mia finally uncovers the reason her Death Angel boss saved her from dying, her life is turned upside down… and now the whole world depends on her to save it.

Last fall I read the first book in this series by Ashley Robertson called Death Dealer and fell in love with the paranormal world she created. The review is posted on Literary Sweet for anyone wanting to start at the beginning, and I always recommend starting a book one in a series that follows the same characters. This way you don’t lose any of the juicy bits, and these are novella length, so they’re good for a quick read, or if you’re on the go.

Also book one is free on Amazon and Smashwords.

Blood Promise brings a new adventure for Mia and Deacon. Book one shows their relationship grow, but this book brings the pressure and strain that most of us can relate to when life goes wrong. Mia undergoes physical changes whereas Deacon’s love is put to an internal test as he watches her train. I usually don’t mention specifics in my reviews but this is one of my favorite scenes. There is a level of tension rarely addressed in PNR when the significant other is put through the wringer. I found it a grounding and realistic touch because when we or our loved ones face dangerous situations, we don’t sit by idly. We eat at ourselves until the danger passes.

As always Ashley Robertson weaves a tale filled with the unexpected as the death dealers traipse into the unknown against a foe no one expected. Action, mystery, and romance grace the pages as Mia and Deacon rise up, fall down, and … well you’ll have to read it to find out what happens next.

Paranormal romance lovers can rejoice and if you like gritty angels even better. You won’t be disappointed, I know I wasn’t, and I can be a tough cookie to hook, line, and sink.

Belle Bittner was sold to the highest bidder when she was just a child, sought for the magic lying dormant in her blood. She grew up as the adopted daughter of a wealthy vampire couple, and serving the child-trafficking Org seemed her only option in life. But Belle has other plans, and she won’t let anyone get in the way of her escape, even if it means betraying those who try to help her.

Desperate to stay free of an evil vampire who means to possess her no matter what, Belle decides she can use the protection of the flirtatious faery named Roon. The two of them flee to the faery realm where Rooney believes he can better protect her. What he doesn’t know is that taking the beautiful siren through the golden door will set off a cataclysm of events that will threaten the fabric of both the human and the faery worlds.

Separating myth from fact to decipher the truth about her powers could mean the destruction of the new life Belle’s trying so hard to build.

I’ve read Bend-Bite-Shift and since then I’ve always thought Roon needed his own story. Olivia did this one perfectly and although it’s not his story alone, he will be the star for anyone who has read the previous trilogy and cried for his broken heart.

I love this world and can’t wait to read what happens next. The trilogy block style has been fun to follow, while it moves the previous trilogy forward. At the same time, you could just as easily start here as there’s enough backstory weaved in.

I’ve followed Olivia Hardin and have come to love her writing and storytelling. Now I’ll have to patiently wait for book two and catch up on her backlist. If you enjoy urban fantasy worlds with a collection of supernatural beings, magic, strong romance, and well rounded characters then you should pick up Olivia Hardin. She also writes contemporary romance.

Holden told Olivia it was only a matter of time before Hell came for them. After all, one doesn’t just walk away from the life he lived unscathed, but the longer Hell waited, the more Olivia let down her guard. She believed maybe happily ever after was possible—he knew it wasn’t. But when Baker shows up beaten and bloody on their doorstep with a message, all hope evaporates. The jinn make Holden an offer he can’t refuse: convince Olivia to free them all and the jinn will fight Hell alongside them. However, if their past has proved anything, it’s that the jinn cannot be trusted. When Olivia starts hearing a voice that no one can identify and Baker isn’t acting like himself, he is forced to make a decision. With Heaven staying hands off, Holden considers accepting the jinn’s offer behind Olivia’s back. One thing is clear, with their lives and the lives all those they hold dear at stake, something has to be done. If it were as easy as Holden going back to the jinn, he would do it in a heartbeat, but Hell wants more than his soul this time—they want Olivia’s too.

Liz Schulte was one of the first Indie authors I ever read and she’s still one of my favorites. With each story she ceases to amaze me with her solid worlds and characters. It seems fitting that she’d be featured in the first review on this blog. If you’re unfamiliar with her work, especially if you’re interested in Ember, be sure to read her Guardian trilogy.

Jinn, demons, Guardians, and angels … oh and let’s not forget Sehkmet and shifters too.

Ember and the Jinn Trilogy as a whole are reads I’d been long awaiting ever since the end of the Guardian Trilogy. They both feature the same characters (Olivia, Holden, Femi, and Baker) along with some not so new faces. Hell strikes back, secrets run in abundance, and Olivia hears voices. It’s a tantalizing intro into the new trilogy that left me craving more.

I enjoyed revisiting with Olivia and Holden. They’ve grown a lot since Guardian Trilogy, but they’re still one of my favorite PNR couples. Neither is perfect, yet they’re perfect for each other. At the same time, reading Baker was interesting. I enjoyed his witty sayings, but I’m still not certain I really got to know him on the same level as Olivia and Holden. He’s the type that intrigues me, but is it because i don’t know so much?   Regardless, another beautiful story will rest peacefully on my iPhone, and I am eagerly awaiting the next book.

About Author Liz Schulte

Many authors claim to have known their calling from a young age. Liz Schulte, however, didn’t always want to be an author. In fact, she had no clue. Liz wanted to be a veterinarian, then she wanted to be a lawyer, then she wanted to be a criminal profiler. In a valiant effort to keep from becoming Walter Mitty, Liz put pen to paper and began writing her first novel. It was at that moment she realized this is what she was meant to do. As a scribe she could be all of those things and so much more. When Liz isn’t writing or on social networks she is inflicting movie quotes and trivia on people, reading, traveling, and hanging out with friends and family. Liz is a Midwest girl through and through, though she would be perfectly happy never having to shovel her driveway again. She has a love for all things spooky, supernatural, and snarky. Her favorite authors range from Edgar Allen Poe to Joseph Heller to Jane Austen to Jim Butcher and everything in between. Follow Liz Schulte: Website | Facebook | Twitter | GoodReads

Free Short Story and Flash Fiction from Immortal Lies

(Psst … Jump to the bottom for the flash fiction and short story, but you’ll miss out on important updates)

Long before I began writing  again, I ran a book blog. At first it became a way to share opinions, but over time it consumed more and more of my life. Still, I pressed forward. After all, all writers should read too.

button 180x

For years I maintained a fine balance and handled it fairly well. Then I published my first book. Ouch, a platform? Oh I need to reach out and chat with fans  too? Double ouch — not that I don’t love you all, but the stretch left me paper thin and grouchy.

My grouchy face.

My grouchy face.

Something had to give. I realize that now. I’m only one person. So starting soon I’ll begin reviewing books on this blog. But here’s the catch, y’all signed up for something entirely different. I keep my promises and promised not to send anything unrelated to my author status.

Older reviews will trickle in and to be honest, I don’t know if you’ll see them in the e-mail feed. I’m post dating, so I hope not. If I notice them, I’ll pause the feed, but it will take me upward of a month or two to get them all moved.

To keep it fair, you have my permission to unsubscribe. Don’t worry, I won’t be hurt if you do. However, there’s  no more than two reviews a week -if any-, and no book blasts.  Those will stay over at Literary Sweet. However, from time to time, there will be interviews and guest posts as long as they relate to writing or the fantasy/romance genre.

Okay, so I don't have an excited face. At least not a picture. This is my relaxed face.

Okay, so I don’t have an excited face. At least not a picture. This is my relaxed face.

But for those visit the site, you’ll see all pretty tabs and drop-downs that I’ll soon fill with past and new book reviews. I’ve even added a new tab for my editing and beta services. Pricing is geared toward new indie authors, and I’ll even swap services.

On to the Author/Book News

I’m patiently waiting for Tears of the Valkyrie to come back from beta readers. I know I’ve said this for awhile. Well last time some major changes were needed to address a few flaws. Then I had to let those changes marinate. More eyes are always better, so if you’re into erotic UF/PNR with a little M/M action, drop me a line.

Constricted is wrapping up and shaped into a trilogy. While it too has an estimated release date of 2014, we’ll see. I don’t want to release anything less than sub par, and Viciously Fictitious sets the final date.

I have the second book (a stand alone) in the Midgard series ready for beta reading. It’s erotic PNR featuring the kelpie and the original draugr of my world. Roughly 65k words of hot Guardian and vampire (draugr) action. If anyone would like to take a crack at it, please just hit reply/contact me.

I leave you with two glorious flash fiction pieces from Immortal Lies and my new short story, Claws of Insanity. All are my Christmas gifts to you and I hope you enjoy them. At the end of the short story, you will find the first chapter of Tears of the Valkyrie. Claws of Insanity will be released in .mobi/.epub, but I ran out of time.

While the flash fiction pieces feature the main characters of Immortal Lies and how they came about. I actually write these for every main character I create as an exercise, but these two stories took on their own voices.

Both pieces are scheduled to release with the book, but y’all get a sneak peak. Minor spoilers for the Alfheim series are in Kelpie Risen. All three pieces are free of sex, however they were written with mature audiences in mind. Please enjoy and have a safe holiday.
