No one knows the secrets he keeps.
No one knows of the worlds that exist right alongside ours.
Benton is human, but he walks the line between two worlds: the mundane and the supernatural; the commonplace and the extraordinary. As a rare Fire Elemental Warlock, he finds himself in trouble more often than he cares to admit. It doesn’t help that his sister is a Faery Queen of the Summer Seelie Court.
This is Benton’s story as he makes his way between the mortal world and a world where magic reigns. Do you dare follow? Do you dare see what lurks just beyond the edge of perception?
I’m a sucker for books from the male point-of-view. Don’t ask me why, but I find it refreshing. For those unfamiliar with author Alexia Purdy, she writes on the darker side of fantasy, and I’ve been reading since the beginning of the series when she hooked me with Evershade.
But this is Benton’s story and Benton is my kind of guy. He isn’t whiny but he isn’t overdone either. There’s a balance in him that he must find, a journey.
The writing style is carefree and easy classic of Alexia Purdy making her books enjoyable for generations. The tales and worlds she weaves are complete, no holes yet highly believable. Although this is a standalone and the beginning of a new spin-off series, I always recommend that readers start at the beginning. You won’t be disappointed either way, but the experience of reading Alexia Purdy’s a dark faerie tale series is priceless.

I nodded and flinched away from her gaze. So, I was mostly impervious to Fey magic, but it sure made my skin crawl like a gazillion tiny worms had decided to dig in and call it home. I fiddled with the frayed ends of the woven quilt draping his thighs. I could still feel her eyes upon me, but the crawling feeling faded as I breathed in slowly.
“You don’t have to use up any of your little faery tricks on me, they don’t work so well.”
“Hmf!” Sary stalked away, not bothering to apologize as she continued her tirade, right out the front door, letting the violent slam that followed shake the entire apartment.
Apparently, Shade hadn’t told Sary about Ferdinand’s illegal siphoning of magics. This would devastate her. I hoped she’d understand when she found out her brother’s true nature. I pondered telling her myself, but it’d already backfired in my face to question anything she was determined to do.
I rubbed my chin, leaning back as I shoved the tray aside on the large, creaky bed. I’d have to let her find out for herself. This was none of my business, right? That didn’t mean I couldn’t go along with them for protection. I may be human, but as even my mother told me once…I was an equal, if not more powerful than a Faery. Shade had the best of both worlds, but I was a power to match any Fey’s. Some weird balance of nature I guess. Still, I could be of use on this mission, not just for Sary to find her brother, but to find more of the missing Unseelie and Sluagh escapees I was sent to track and dispose of. Besides, whatever was calling me to Chicago, this dire compulsion, needed to be squelched.
